They discussed NATO’s operation in Afghanistan, the situation in Kosovo and the upcoming meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Brussels, 26 January. Foreign Minister d’Alema reiterated his government’s commitment to maintaining its current contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan and stressed the need for both military and civil efforts in support of the Afghan authorities. On Kosovo, the Minister and the Secretary General agreed that NATO’s engagement in the post-status talks process was important and expressed their full support for President Ahtisaari as he prepares to announce his recommendations for Kosovo’s future. Finally, Mr. d’Alema and the Secretary General looked forward to the January 26 meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers and a discussion of a broader international support for Afghanistan, including both civil and military components.
